MSUKUMO WA UVAAJI WA UHUSIKA WA KIKE KWA WAIGIZAJI WA KIUME KATIKA KOMEDIA ZA KISWAHILI NCHINI TANZANIA
Abstract
The main purpose of this article is to examine the factors that motivate male actors to portray female charactors in Swahili comedies in Tanzania. This investigation was guided by the Reception Theor. The study was conducted in the Urban West Region on Unguja Island. A total of 20 informants were participated, including elders, youths, students and performers from a special acting troupe. Data collected through interviews and analysed using a descriptive approach. Findings have revealed that seeking income, empowerment, entertainment, and others have been discovered. Overall, this study contributed new knowledge by highlighting the reasons behind such portrayals from the community’s perspevtives and uncovering how gender concepts are constructed, reflected and received in artistic works, especially comedy.`
